Father Francis G. VanBergen

Fr. Francis G. VanBergen, 84, died Nov. 18, 2012, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Fr. VanBergen was ordained a Roman Catholic priest for the Diocese of Cleveland in June of 1956, where he served at numerous parishes, retiring in 2003. A year later he came to Utah at the invitation of Monsignor Victor G. Bonnell, a former classmate, who was then pastor of Saint Rose of Lima Parish in Layton. Fr. VanBergen served as associate pastor at St. Rose of Lima Parish from 2004 to 2007.

"He was a great help in the parish, where his kind and cheerful nature won him many friends," Msgr. Bonnell said.

Fr. VanBergen was preceded in death by his parents, Frank W. and Marcella (nee Wagner), and sisters Jeanne and Marcia VanBergen. He is survived by his siblings: Phyllis McNally (husband Thomas – deceased), Edward J. (Shirley Vokac), Florence Wukovich (husband Nick – deceased) and Rosemary Busher (husband John – deceased), 21 nieces and nephews and a great-uncle.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 26, in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church of Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in South Euclid, Ohio, followed by burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to his brother, Edward VanBergen, 111 E. 291st St., Willowick, OH, 44095.
