Father James Fogarty

SALT LAKE CITY — Father James Fogarty, a priest of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, died on Sept. 6, 2013 at the age of 84, in Nayarit, Mexico, where he was living in retirement.

Fr. Fogarty was born on Aug. 13, 1929 in Longfordwood, Clonakenny, in County Tipperary, Ireland, to Patrick Fogarty and Anastasia Longe. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Salt Lake City on June 17, 1952 at St. John’s College, Waterford, Ireland by Bishop Colacan, having been incardinated in the Diocese of Salt Lake City on June 10, 1954.

He served as assistant pastor at Saint Joseph Parish, Ogden (1954-1959), Saint Patrick Parish, Salt Lake City (1959-1960), and Saint Ambrose Parish, Salt Lake City (1960-1962); and then as pastor at Saint James Parish, Vernal (1962-1966), Immaculate Conception Parish, Copperton (1966-1969) and Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, West Jordan (1969-1972).

In July 1972 he was granted a leave from the diocese to serve with the Latin American Missions Program in Mexico, where he served until his retirement on Aug. 31, 1994.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 7.
