OGDEN — Saint Joseph Catholic High School’s Class of 2013, set to graduate May 24, looks forward to next year’s opportunities as college freshmen. With a graduation rate of 100 percent, the school often produces students who go on to top-ranked colleges in the nation. Many of these exceptional students also participate in college athletics. Seven Jayhawks from the Class of 2012 went on to play college athletics. This year, five seniors will participate in college athletics. Zach Johnstun and Katie Panushka are playing basketball with Willamette University and Westminster College, respectively.

On Feb. 6, Mitch Koehler, Jordan Jones and Adam Broadstein signed with colleges across the country to play collegiate soccer.

Koehler signed with Regis University to play men’s soccer. Regis University is a private Jesuit school located in Denver, Colo. Koehler said he looks forward to the school’s excellent academics, and loves Denver.

"I’m really excited to play for them, but I’m nervous, too," he said.

Jones signed a letter of intent with South Dakota School of Mines, and Broadstein will play for Belmont Abbey College, a Catholic school located near Charlotte, N.C.

Johnstun has signed with Salem, Oregon’s Willamette University to play basketball. "I actually became interested in the school for their really good law program, and then talked to the coach about playing for their team," Johnstun said, adding that he would "just love practicing with them."

Panushka, a standout on this year’s championship basketball team, is set to play basketball for Westminster College in Salt Lake City. She became interested in the school when St. Joseph’s basketball coach, Joe Cravens, connected her to Westminster’s assistant basketball coach. Soon after, the school began to recruit Panushka.

"I’m just expecting to work really hard, and listen to whatever my coach tells me to do," Panushka said.

Saint Joseph Athletic Director Alex Salvo said, "We are proud of these student athletes. They can carry themselves to the next level, along with St. Joe’s tradition of hard work and moral values."
