On the 50th day after Easter, on Pentecost Sunday, Saint Joseph the Worker Parish celebrated the 50th anniversary of Father James Semple’s priestly ordination. Fr. Semple is retired but assists at St. Joseph the Worker Parish. Parishioners presented him with a book of memories that included hand-written personal notes, and a commemorative plaque. "For us here at St. Joe’s … it’s a great honor for us," said Father Patrick Carley, the pastor. "It’s a very solemn and sweet and holy occasion for us, also." The celebratory gathering included Fr. Semple’s sister, who came from Ireland; and his brother, who now lives in Denver, as well as others from parishes where Fr. Semple has served within the Diocese of Salt Lake City. "It is wonderful that you come and celebrate this great day with him." Among those who attended was Bea McBride, the former director of religious education at Saint Therese of the Child Jesus Parish. Fr. Semple hired McBride; she remembers him cooking wonderful lunches for her and the parish secretary. His spirit-filled homilies also were wonderful, she said. IC photo/Marie Mischel
