Immigration themes

By The Most Rev. John C. Wester
Bishop of Salt Lake City

Last Tuesday, I joined Tony Yapias, Father Omar Ontiveros and Mark Alvarez for a radio show on 1550 AM on immigration themes. It was a challenging program for me because the show is in Spanish. Luckily, Fr. Omar stood at my side and helped me with the translations.

I am sure I made many grammatical mistakes but hopefully the message got through! As you know, many people are concerned about our country’s immigration policies. The bishops of the United States Catholic Conference have been very vocal about their desire to pass comprehensive immigration reform in our country. I have already written about this topic in a recent Tuesday Tapestry. The radio show this past week was an opportunity to get the message out and to promote reform that will make our immigration laws current and help our immigrants to become full members of our wonderful country. I encourage all Catholics in Utah to continue to study the issue and to support our efforts to bring about true immigration reform as soon as possible.

Editor’s Note: This is the first section of Bishop Wester’s blog, which can be found in its entirety online at www.icatholic.org. In this week’s blog he also discusses the Hispanic Clergy meeting; a visit with Steve Carlston, the new vice president/general manager of KUTV; health care coverage for diocese employees; the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ National Advisory Board; and the March for America rally in Washington, D.C. urging comprehensive immigration legislation reform.
