DRAPER — The Juan Diego Catholic High School boys basketball team, with a 19-6 record for the 2014 season, had more wins this year than they have had since 2005.

The team was led by Drew Trost, in his first year at Juan Diego, and "a hard-working group of six seniors led by Gabe Colosimo," said Trost. "The team worked hard beginning in the off-season and it was great to see us accomplish some of our goals such as earning a first-round playoff home game and getting down to Southern Utah University. Although we will miss these seniors, the future is very bright for JDCHS basketball. We have a lot of talent in the program."

Trost is proud of how the team responded to a new system, he said. "The seniors truly set the tone with an excellent work ethic and tenacious play," he said.

Trost’s experience includes playing guard at Calumet College of Saint Joseph in Whiting, Ind. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University in math and secondary education, a master’s degree from Indiana University in Education Administration and served as a math teacher and head basketball coach for eight years at Bishop Noll Institute in Hammond, Ind.

During the 2006-2009 seasons, Trost was chosen by a Top 10 Senior as his/her most influential teacher.

Trost was the 2011 Northwest Indiana Times Coach of the Year; the newspaper that presented the award covers more than 75 high schools of all sizes. He also was the Post Tribune Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2011; the Tribune is another northwest Indiana newspaper that covers over 75 high schools of all sizes.

In 2008 and 2011, Trost’s teams were the 2011 State Runner Up out of 116 2A schools with a 26-1 season record. They were the sectional champions, advancing to Sweet 16 out of more than 100 schools in 2008 and 2011. His teams were GSSC Conference Champions in 2011, 2012 and 2013. In 2012, his team set a school record for program wins: 50-12 for varsity, junior varsity and freshmen.
