The Juan Diego and Judge Memorial football teams celebrated the 10th anniversary of their annual football rivalry in style this year. The rivals played against each other in the semi-final game on Nov. 12, at Rice-Eccles Stadium to determine which team would advance to the state title game.

Never before in their short storied history had the two Catholic school teams met so far into the playoffs.

The head coaches of both teams were Judge Memorial alumni: John Colosimo, Judge Class of 1974, headed the Soaring Eagle squad; James Cordova, Judge Class of 1988, was at the helm of the Bulldogs. Another interesting tidbit is that John Colosimo’s high school coach was James Cordova’s father, Gilbert Cordova, Judge Class of 1956.

It was a defensive battle throughout the whole game with numerous turnovers and penalties from both sides.

"It was tough," Cordova said. "They were fantastic on defense."

Juan Diego prevailed in overtime when tight end Eric Heinz caught an 11-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone from second-string quarterback Brock Garn.

"What a great night for the Catholic community of Utah, the two Catholic schools taking center stage at Rice-Eccles Stadium and playing a barn burner that neither team wanted to lose," Colosimo said. "My hat is off to the Judge Bulldogs and Coach James Cordova for their great performance not only in the semifinal game but throughout the playoffs as well."

Judge Memorial struggled with their offensive consistency most of the night, but put together a strong fourth-quarter drive when quarterback James Delaccenserie threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to running back Christian Weidle, forcing the game to go into overtime.

Juan Diego moves on to the 3A state championship on Friday, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. against Hurricane for the third straight year.
