SALT LAKE CITY — Joe Alex Gutierrez, 71, died in his sleep on Aug 4, 2011.

He was born in Antonito, Colo., on Aug. 19, 1939, the son of Ross Gutierrez and Sarah Casias. Gutierrez served honorably in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964 and worked at the V.A. hospital for 28 years, followed by service at the Utah Air National Guard Base.

Gutierrez is survived by his mother, Sarah Anzanares; children Julie (John) Santistevan, Michael (Susan), Kelly; siblings Manual (Brenda) Manzanares, Margo (Brian) Zarker, Georgiana (Wayne) McGillick, Elaine (Max) Lozano, John Manzanares and Carol Lundberg; nine grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, sister Joyce Wilcox and brother Patrick Manzanares.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Patrick Catholic Church.
