John R. Winter

SALT LAKE CITY — John R. Winter, 75, died Jan. 9.

Winter was born Aug. 15, 1933, to John Reuel and Marjorie Moore Winter in Salt Lake City. He graduated from South High School. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1955, where he was active in Sigma Fraternity. He was commissioned in the United States Air Force and received his pilot’s wings at Laredo Air Force Base in Texas. He flew a variety of jet and conventional aircraft for 20 years. His military career included two overseas assignments: a year in Thule, Greenland, and a tour in Vietnam. After 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, he retired as a Lt. Colonel at HQ Strategic Air Command. His military decorations include the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, and Air Medal with clusters. He then worked for the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and Con Edison in New York City in public relations. He moved to Salt Lake City in 1980, and retired from consumer affairs in 1986, to pursue hiking and traveling to foreign lands.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Constance Diane Cross; children, Gregory (Pamela) Winter, Laura (Tony) Bensen, Constance Goodman, and John (Karyn) Winter; 10 grandchildren; sister, Rueleen (Stuart) Holiday; brother, Steve Johnson; and partner Merla Eaton and her children, Heidi (Sam) Wainer, Josh (Suzette) Eaton, and four grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Catherine of Siena Parish and Newman Center. Committal was in Utah Veterans Memorial Park.
