SALT LAKE CITY — Judge Memorial Catholic High School photography faculty member Chris Sloan said it best: "Pretty cool news. It is not often that work by my photography students is featured in the New York Times."

Yet, that is exactly what has happened. Sloan’s students participated in the New York Times’ "My Hometown" project, taking photos around Salt Lake City. The students’ photography was varied, from scenery shots to family and friends to artistic shots. One of the students, junior John Garlinghouse, took a photo of Sloan himself.

"My interest in photography would not be where it is today without him," said Garlinghouse of his teacher. "He is inspiring in all his does."

Three of the students had their work highlighted as Editors’ Picks. Sean Liston, a senior, featured his backyard view of Mount Olympus. Ben Harvey, Class of 2013, had two photos featured, one of an eagle in flight at the Farmington Bird Refuge in northern Utah and another he called "lighting steel wool."

Also featured in the Utah section are Judge students Lauren Allegra, Lupita Avila, Chris Ayers, Reid Bell, Abby Bolic, Emily Cokl, John Garlinghouse, Carter Hendrickson, Duncan Hickman, Patrick Jahries, Madelina James, Zach LeMon, Mary McKinlay, Monica Ostrom, Elese Peifer, Steven Sansone and Nick Stefanich.

All told, more than 3,000 teenagers in 45 states participated in the "My Hometown" photography project.
