SALT LAKE CITY - Judge Memorial Catholic High School German students recently participated in the 2010 American Association of Teacher of German (AATG) testing with outstanding results.

Three students, sophomores Gabrielle Ghabash and Caitlin Gruis and freshman Julia Pynes, participated in the German II testing and scored above 90 percent. All three will receive a certificate of commendation from the National AATG. As Ghabash and Pynes speak German at home, they do not qualify to proceed to the finalist competition. Gruis, however, does qualify to move on to the finalist round. This will involve an oral interview in March to determine whether she will go on to represent the local AATG chapter at the national level.

This is the fourth year a Judge student has qualified for this round.

Sophomore Kelsey Cavanaugh scored 84 percent. She, too, will receive a certificate from the National AATG. Overall, 19 Judge students took this German II level test.

In German III testing, junior Jake Brugger scored a 99 percent, placing him in the 90th percentile for the second consecutive year. Brugger's score qualifies him to proceed to the finalist competition. Brugger placed second.

Senior Anna Adams was the sole Judge student to take the German IV exam, scoring 82 percent. She will receive a certificate from the National AATG. Adams placed third.

Brugger and Gruis will be interviewed in the spring in the finalist competition.

Art Holder, Judge Memorial German teacher, was honored by the University of Utah's College of Humanities with the prestigious Duden Award, presented annually by the Utah chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG) in spring 2009.

"Although our program is small, you can see that our students performed well statewide," said Holder.
