The 1st- and 4th-grade students at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Elementary/Middle School teamed up to make 30 quilts for the Alzheimer’s Disease Cooperative Study (ADCS) group based in San Diego at the University of California. Funded by the National Institute on Aging, ADCS coordinates clinical trials at about 70 sites nationwide with over 3,000 people participating. The quilts will be distributed to those people who are afflicted with this disease and are participating in the studies and receiving treatment with experimental drugs. This quilting project is part of the Character Education Program at Blessed Sacrament School. In preparation of the quilting project, students in both grades read Maria Shriver’s book "What’s Happening to Grandpa." This age-appropriate book did a great job in explaining the affects of Alzheimer’s on people.
