SALT LAKE CITY — The Diocese of Salt Lake City Office of Religious Education has announced an August starting date for a new group of lay leaders who will study and prepare to serve the local Church.
“This will be the third cohort we have formed since the U.S. Bishops released their foundational document, Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord,  in 2005,” said Susan Northway, program director. “The Second Vatican Council calls the People of God to fulfill their baptismal promises by building up the kingdom of God. Each of us is given talents we may use to serve the Church. The U.S. Bishops wisely recognized that leaders need special formation. Co-Workers lays out a framework of leadership formation for dioceses. It is a wonderful educational opportunity. It is our privilege to assist lay ministers as they discern their calls to service.”
The diocesan four-year program features academic preparation and theological study in adult learning and online formats.
“Throughout the process participants deepen their prayer lives and consult with their spiritual directors,” Northway said. “They gain practical experience as lay leaders within parishes and other settings. They learn how to build ministry teams and practice conflict resolution. They gain skills to help them discern and affirm God-given gifts in others.”
After successful completion of the program, the candidates are blessed by the bishop for ministry and they are certified as LEMs.
Information and applications for the program are available at www.dioslc.org, or email Susan.Northway@dioslc.org, or call 801-328-8641x326.
