Leon Uriarte

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ — Leon Uriarte, 89, died on March 22, 2013.

Uriarte was born in Mountain Home, Idaho, on Nov. 6, 1923 to Sebastiana Odriosola and Justo Uriarte. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1943 and was stationed in the Pacific Islands during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Barbara Elaine Tessman on Sept. 21, 1946. She passed away and he then married Colleen Weaver in 1960 (later divorced). In 1970, he married Thelma Dorka.

Uriarte served as a councilman and planning commissioner for Park City for 16 years and was elected mayor of Park City in 1975. He was also very active in the Park City Elks Club #734 and served as their Exalted Ruler at one time.

Uriarte worked on the upkeep of the old Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and helped to rebuild it after it burned a second time in the 1950s.

Uriarte is survived by wife Thelma; children Richard Uriarte, Sherrie Prince, Michael Uriarte and Howard Uriarte (Penny); stepson Frank Dorka (Maureen); seven grandchildren and 13 great- grandchildren.

Uriarte was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Barbara E. Uriarte; siblings Juanita Uriarte Gorlinski, Joseph Uriarte, Mary Uriarte Mair and Pilar Uriarte Reese, and son-in-law Frederick S. Prince, Jr.
