SALT LAKE CITY — Mary Margaret Hudson Ciet, passed away peacefully in the arms of her oldest son as she slept.
Mary was born on Aug. 22, 1944 in Vancouver, Wash., where her parents worked in the shipyards during World War II. She moved to Utah as a child and had fond memories of being a little girl at her grandma Elnora Shimek Wanek’s ranch in Lost Spring, Wyo.
Mary attended Moab High School and married Larry Sheets; they had one child together, Larry Lee Sheets Ciet, Jr.; they were later divorced. She moved to Salt Lake City, where she met her second husband, Jack Arnold Ciet. They were married on Sept. 29, 1968. Jack adopted Larry, and together she and Jack had two children, John Robert Ciet and Amber Kay Ciet.
Mary was a nurse and worked in labor and delivery, caring for the elderly, and, her favorite calling, caring for disabled children at home and in schools. She made many friends as a nurse and impacted many lives.
Her favorite activity was anything, as long as her family was there. She and her husband, Jack, went to New York for the first time last November and she did what she always wanted to do: go to a Broadway play, visit Central Park, and eat a Waldorf Salad at the Waldorf Astoria. She loved camping, fishing and hunting and family traditions during the holidays.
Mary would be the first to admit she wasn’t a cook. As a matter of practicality, she would make large quantities at the first of the week so she wouldn’t have to cook again for days. Unfortunately, she believed in speed reheating on the stove top and many of her leftovers were “toast” before they made it to the dinner table. Her scorched goulash will finally be missed.
Mary is survived by her husband, Jack, of 47 years; children Larry Ciet (Tom Campbell), John (Eunkyong “Kay”) Ciet, Amber Ciet; sister Billie Jean (Leonard) Kaufman; grandchildren Gabrielle Minyoung Ciet, Caroline Minkyoung Ciet, Jack Mingin Ciet; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Hughie and Mildred Belle Shimek Wanek.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 21 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
