Msgr. Robert C. Pollock

SALT LAKE CITY — Rev. Monsignor Robert C. Pollock, 88, long-time Utah pastor and pro-life advocate, died Dec. 2, 2010, after suffering a stroke. He retired from pastoral administration in 1992 and was a resident of CHRISTUS St. Joseph Villa.

Msgr. Pollock was born June 13, 1922, to John and Selma Pollock in Belleville, Ill. In 1936, he entered the Pontifical Josephinum Seminary, in Worthington, Ohio, as a high school student and remained there to complete college and theological studies. On May 30, 1948, he was ordained a Roman Catholic priest for service in the Diocese of Salt Lake City.

During his 62 years as a priest, Msgr. Pollock served in numerous assignments and in each was enthusiastic and hardworking. He was parochial vicar at Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish in Price, as well as at Saint Joseph Parish in Ogden and Sacred Heart and Saint Patrick parishes in Salt Lake City.

As director of the Catholic Youth Organization, Msgr. Pollock was recognized for the annual pilgrimages he organized for young people. He also served as editor of the diocesan Intermountain Catholic newspaper.

As pastor of Saint Olaf Parish, Bountiful, Msgr. Pollock oversaw construction of the parish elementary school and convent. He then served as pastor at Saint Therese of the Child Jesus Parish in Midvale, and in 1972 was named the founding pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Sandy, where he built the church, rectory and parish center. It was his leadership that brought the decision to divide Blessed Sacrament Parish to form Saint Thomas More Parish in Sandy.

In 1986, Msgr. Pollock became pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Parish in West Valley City, where he served until his retirement.

In 1991, he was named a Prelate of Honor by Pope John Paul II in recognition of his many years of faithful service as pastor, builder and pro life advocate.

Msgr. Pollock devoted his life to the Church and to his parishioners. He generously accepted difficult assignments and was known for his ardent devotion to the Most Holy Eucharist. His day was centered on his celebration of Mass and hour of adoration. Throughout his retirement, he was a very generous donor to the diocesan seminary fund and prayed daily for priestly vocations.

He is survived by his brother, James Pollock, and nephew, John Pollock, both of California; and niece, Sharon Secresp, of Oregon. Contributions in his memory can be made to the Priests’ Mutual Benefit Society of the Diocese of Salt Lake City.

The vigil for Msgr. Pollock was held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Sandy, on Dec. 5. The funeral Mass was celebrated Dec. 6 at The Cathedral of the Madeleine, Salt Lake City.
