Sister Victorine Houde

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. — Benedictine Sister Victorine (Leah) Houde, 97, died at Saint Scholastica Convent on Oct. 29, 2010.

Sr. Victorine was born Oct. 25, 1913, to Thomas and Ida Chevalier Houde in Minneapolis, Minn. She made her first monastic profession July 11, 1934, and her perpetual profession July 11, 1937. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 1984, her 60th anniversary in 1994 and her 75th anniversary in 2009.

For 50 years, Sr. Victorine served in health care, including 38 years at St. Cloud Hospital in Minnesota. She assisted in the pharmacy at St. Benedict’s Hospital in Ogden in 1948 and then started the polio unit at the Ogden hospital and worked there for one and a half years before returning to Minnesota in 1950. Sr. Victorine enjoyed music and had many memories of time spent in the early days at the sisters’ little cottage behind St. Cloud Hospital.

She is survived by her Benedictine community, nephews and one niece.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Chapel, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, Minn. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery.

Kathryn Herschberg

PARK CITY — Kathryn Herschberg, 74, died at home after a valiant battle with cancer on Nov. 1, 2010. She was a member of Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish.

Herschberg was born Jan. 15, 1936. She will be remembered fondly for her no-nonsense attitude and tellin’ it like it is. In addition to raising four children, she was controller for several big businesses in California, including Purex Corporation Foreign Operations. In 1991 she moved to Park City, where she and her husband Tom opened the Owl’s Roost Bed & Breakfast. She soon got very involved in the community by joining Park City Ambassadors, where she led them as their president in many July 4th parades and Snowflakers Balls.

She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for more than 50 years and led chapters in California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah. She served as president of the Salt Lake City Council and was instrumental in founding several new chapters including most recently the Park City Chapter of Laureate Pi. She also chaired many state and regional conventions. She was the recipient of the "International Award of Distinction." She was the lead wedding coordinator for many years at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Also, she and Tom were vested into the Equestrian Order of the Sepulchre of Holy Jerusalem Western USA Lieutenancy. Herschberg served as chairman of the Board of Directors for Peace House Women’s Shelter in Park City. She was the chief of Track Marshalls at the Bobsled/Skeleton events during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Tom; her three sons Tim (Carol), John (Deanne) and Matthew; grandchildren Eric, Brenna and Ian, Chris; her sister Ruth; brother-in-law Jim; special friend Jim Lawor; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.

Edward Stowers

SANDY — Edward Stowers, 70, died Nov. 5, 2010.

Stowers was born April 18, 1940. He had the heart of a gentleman and the soul of a cowboy. He trained dogs for the military, was an experienced horseman and could fix, grow or build anything. He wrote two books, one of which was recently published. He was a kind, considerate and caring man.

He is survived by his wife Adelaide; son John; daughter Tracy; extended family and grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church. Committal was in Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Jean R. Kelly

PARK CITY — Jean R. Kelly, 85, died Nov. 9, 2010.

She was born Sept. 27, 1925.

She is survived by her son Tom (Elaine) Kelly; daughter Patti (Jerry) Boone; and grandchildren Alex, Mathew, Michael and Jessy; and her lifelong friend Alice Harte.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church.

LaVell E. Holmes

SALT LAKE CITY — LaVell E. Holmes, 78, died Nov. 10, 2010.

Holmes was born May 12, 1932, in Kanosh, Utah, to Ershel Barnes and Hattie Abbott Holmes. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He married Elsie Etzel on June 22, 1957. He was an aircraft mechanic for Thompson Flying Service and retired from Hill Air Force Base.

He was a sweet, gentle and kind man, who loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved to hunt and fish.

Holmes is survived by his wife Elsie; children Archie LaVell (Margaret) Holmes, Helen Kay, Kathy (Lyle) Obray and Brenda (Steven) Matern; six grandchildren Kelli, Nicholas, Derek, Nathan, Chad and Brendan; one great-grandson Mikail; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral of the Madeleine. Committal was in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
