Our Lady of Lourdes Parish plans 100th anniversary celebration

Friday, May. 31, 2013

SALT LAKE CITY — Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Salt Lake City is gearing up for its 100th anniversary celebration June 30. The Most Rev. John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, will celebrate the only Mass to be held that Sunday at the parish.

Our Lady of Lourdes Parish was established on June 29, 1913, by Bishop Lawrence Scanlan to care for the Catholics who attended Mass in the chapel of the Judge Mercy Home and Hospital, which opened in 1910 on 1100 East between 600 and 700 South in Salt Lake City, according to "Salt of the Earth," by Bernice Maher Mooney, former diocesan archivist, and Monsignor J. Terrence Fitzgerald, now vicar general emeritus. The church was dedicated on June 14, 1914.

During the church’s first year, 50 children celebrated their First Holy Communion and Bishop Scanlan conferred the sacrament of Confirmation upon 40 people.

The altar in Our Lady of Lourdes Church was formerly used in Saint Mary Magdalene Church, which was vacated when that parish moved to the Cathedral of St. Mary Magdalene.

In 1949, the grade school at Judge Memorial Catholic High School became the financial responsibility of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish.

The original church structure was remodeled and the basement added in 1951. In 1962 a rectory and Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School were constructed; the school opened in 1963. In the 1980s, under the direction of Monsignor James T. Kenny, the church was further remodeled to accommodate the changes brought about by the Second Vatican Council.
