On Sept. 15, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades received the Brown Scapular.
There are many scapulars of various colors, materials, and styles associated with various saints and religious orders, all for slightly different intentions and attached promises. However, the original scapular is the Brown Scapular associated with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. The devotion to the Blessed Virgin dates back to July 16, 1251, when the Blessed Mary made this promise to Saint Simon Stock: “Take this scapular; it shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and a pledge of peace.”
The students were prepared to receive this sacramental by their teachers and Father J.J. Schwall, pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Through a series of lessons taught by the teachers accompanied by the book, “Garment of Grace,” the students learned the history of the Brown Scapular and its importance to their Catholic identity. Two weeks before the investiture, Fr. Schwall spent time in the classrooms discussing how wearing the Brown Scapular is a visible sign of the students’ love for Mary and their trust in her intercessory powers.
Fourth-grade teacher Mrs. Ferre, who spearheaded the teachings, said, “I felt it important for the students to learn about the scapular and its promise because it is another way for the children to see our Mother Mary’s love and commitment to us. And that by wearing the Brown Scapular and praying to Mary, we can show our love and commitment to her.”
During the spiritual ceremony, Fr. Schwall reminded the students that the Brown Scapular is a wonderful gift from Mary.
“It made me feel closer to Mary and God,” said 5th-grader Alek.
Fourth-grader Riley expressed how it was a very spiritual experience: “I loved kneeling and praying to Mary after getting my Brown Scapular.”
To help the young children understand the greatness that they were taking part in, Fr. Schwall told the children that they “are on Mary’s team.” As it is common to wear jerseys, uniforms or matching jackets in sports or organizations, the Brown Scapular helps people see that Mary is a coach, instructing them to know Her and Her Son more and preparing them for “the game” of this life, he said.
Owen, also in 5th grade, said, “The Brown Scapular makes me feel like Mary is watching me and protecting me.”
More than 60 students and faculty received the Vestments of the Brown Scapular.
“I was so excited to get my Brown Scapular, I wear it every day,” said fourth-grader Kaden.
