All Star Pitch! Noah Hughes, a senior at Judge Memorial Catholic High School, has been chosen to participate in the UHSAA 3A Baseball All-Star game.

Aspiring Journalist Award! MariaFernanda Gomez, a senior at Juan Diego CHS and editor-in-chief of the Speaking Eagle, was awarded a scholarship by the Salt Lake Tribune.

Educated Move! Dominican Sister John Mary Fleming, a member of St. Cecilia Congregation in Nashville, Tenn., has been named executive director of the Secretariat of Catholic Education of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Smart with a Stick! Matt Hirning, a senior at Judge Memorial CHS, has been recognized as a United States Lacrosse Academic All-American.

High Altitude Archbishop! Bishop Samuel J. Aquila, of Fargo, N.D., 61, has been named as archbishop of Denver; Bishop Richard J. Malone of Portland, Maine, 66, was named bishop of Buffalo, N.Y.; and Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of 75-year-old Bishop Edward U. Kmiec from pastoral governance of the Buffalo Diocese.

Century of Service! Benedictine Abbot Gerald Benkert, retired, died May 16 on the grounds of Marmion Abbey in Aurora, Ill. He was 102. He had been the abbey’s first abbot, and at the time of his death, he was believed to have been the oldest U.S. abbot, the oldest Benedictine abbot worldwide, and the world’s second-oldest abbot. He had been in religious life for 89 years and died less than a week shy of his 78th anniversary of priestly ordination.
