Nominated! The Most Rev. John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, has been nominated as chairman-elect of the USCCB Committee on Communications. Also nominated is Archbishop Thomas Rodi of Mobile, Ala. The election will take place at the USCCB Fall General Assembly Nov. 14-16. National Merit Awardees! Five Juan Diego seniors as National Merit Scholarship Competition Semi-Finalists. They are Connor Edwards, Emmanuel Hurtado (also National Hispanic Scholar), Andrew Katsohirakis, Courtney May and Amber Pramann. The students "Commended" in the National Merit competition were Richard Idriss, Erin McDermott, Katherine McIntire, Andrew Moyle and Kelsey Peterson. New Title! Anthony R. Picarello Jr., general counsel for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has been named associate general secretary for policy and advocacy of the USCCB. Picarello succeeds Nancy Wisdo, a 26-year veteran of the USCCB, who is retiring at the end of the year. Picarello has served as general counsel for the USCCB since 2007 and will retain that title.
