SALT LAKE CITY — Ruth Ellen Moore Petersen, 98, passed away Jan. 29, 2012.

Petersen was born on Aug. 11, 1913 in St. Louis, Miss. to Leo Moore and Grace Heffernan. On June 29, 1939, she married Drew M. Petersen. She was an active member of the Weber County Medical Auxiliary and helped organize and promote the St. Benedict’s Hospital Auxiliary program, serving as president for two years. In addition, Aug. 9, 2003 was declared "Ruth Ellen Petersen Day" in Ogden, Utah.

Petersen was a devoted Roman Catholic, involved in the Saint Joseph Catholic Church Parish Council. She was instrumental in the formation of a Catholic Cub Scouts group, chairperson of the Board of Directors for the Catholic Youth Organization and served as president of the Promoters of the League of Sacred Heart.

Petersen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.

Petersen is survived by four sons, Drew M. (Sandra Ann), Dale H. (Dorothy), Donald O. and Dean (Kate); one daughter Natasha Ann Brunson (Joe); 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at the Cathedral of the Madeleine.
