SALT LAKE CITY — At Kearns-St. Ann School, safety is a top priority, so Principal Rox Anne Close and teachers Carrie Justesen and Kayla Viskchol created a safety patrol to keep the students, teachers and parents safe before school and at pick-up time. The safety patrol is comprised of students from grades four through six. Their duties include helping younger students stay in line and be safe before school, and to help these students after school so that teachers can get them into their cars safely. South Salt Lake Police Officer Amanda Gencarella visited the school on Sept. 9 to help train the safety patrol. She discussed important topics such as safely crossing a road, using a crosswalk properly, and ensuring that students accompany the correct person. She then took the students outside to practice being a proper safety patrol. One member of the new safety patrol said he wanted to participate because “I am being responsible and a good role model.” Another student said, “It is new to our school, and I love being a part of it.”
