Saint Ambrose offers new youth Mass

Friday, Nov. 30, 2012

SALT LAKE CITY — Saint Ambrose Parish will start celebrating a 5 p.m. Mass geared toward the youth every Sunday, replacing its 9 a.m. Sunday Mass. The new schedule will begin Dec. 2, the first Sunday of Advent.

"We would like to invite the youth to come every Sunday, and once a month we will offer an activity such as a potluck or pizza for them based on their needs and what they would like to plan," said Father Andrzej Skrzypiec, pastor. "Although this Mass is intended to reach out to the youth, everyone is invited to experience it, as there is always the same Eucharist and celebration of Christ’s presence among us."

The decision to offer the Sunday evening Mass came about because a parish survey revealed that youth like social activities on Saturday night and Sunday during the day, and don’t always attend Mass early on Sunday mornings, Fr. Skrzypiec said. "This will give them an opportunity to attend Mass on Sunday evenings. The Mass will include music and a homily that is more appealing to the youth," he added.

The decision was not made lightly, because the parish has had its current schedule for several years and many parishioners like the Mass times they have attended over the years, said Fr. Skrzypiec. "Putting a new evening Mass on the schedule required taking out one Mass in the morning. It was decided that taking out the 9 a.m. Sunday Mass would be the best solution."

The new Mass schedule will be Saturday at 5 p.m.; and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. (replacing the 7:45 a.m.), 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. The Mass in Polish will be celebrated the first and third Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

"The new schedule will also allow the CCD and RCIA programs to take advantage of a full, undisturbed hour of religious education and formation," said Fr. Skrzypiec. "It will also ease some of the problems with parking during the Masses."
