Pilgrimages are a large part of the Christian experience. From the earliest days, pilgrims journeyed in Jesus’ footsteps and to other holy sites in search of miracles, healing or spiritual renewal.

Pilgrimages are a way of saying that we are journeying together to the fullness of the kingdom of God, said the Most. Rev. John C. Wester, Bishop of Salt Lake City, who two years ago led local pilgrims to various Marian shrines in Mexico.

In this special section, we highlight a number of pilgrimages from the world-famous Holy Land and Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Spain to the lesser-known Abbey of Gethsemani in Trappist, Ky.

As with any trip, even the smallest, proper preparation is key. Before venturing forth, check that your passport is valid, your immunizations are up to date, that your travel arrangements are with reputable companies and be sure to take proper safety precautions.

Even the most careful planning, however, won’t prevent the unexpected. Those experiences are part of the journey and have their own worth. As David Gibson states in the article on page 11 "[a] pilgrim’s purpose, however, is not just to arrive at a holy destination. The time pilgrims spend in travel possesses its own value."
