St. Andrew Students Make Weekly Mass Possible + Enlarge

As a school community, all the students in grades pre-K through eight at St. Andrew’s Catholic School in Riverton gather each week to celebrate Mass together. While Mass is normally an extraordinary experience, the community at St. Andrew feels that their Mass is an extra-special experience because each week the students are deeply integrated into the process of preparing for the Mass and making it possible. The students at St. Andrew’s are being trained as leaders in the Church. From the school choir to the hosting class to the altar servers, the students provide all the ministries at the Mass. Every Friday, the school choir of 14 students gathers to practice the music for the upcoming Mass. Each week, a different class hosts the Mass, from the first-graders to the eighth-graders. These classes are in charge of the readings, Responsorial Psalm and the Prayers of the Faithful. Students are assigned parts and practice for a couple of weeks leading up to the liturgy. Additionally, the pastor, Father Joseph Delka, has trained willing students in grades three through eight to be altar servers. The Friday Masses are a special day where the St. Andrew School community gathers to worship the Lord together, knowing that each of them has a part to play and is uniquely valued.
