St. Daniel's Day Concert at the Cathedral of the Madeleine

Friday, Oct. 03, 2008

SALT LAKE CITY — The Choir of the Cathedral of the Madeleine starts its 19th concert season with its St. Daniel’s Day Concert on Sunday, October 12, 2008 at 8:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Madeleine. This concert will include the following pieces: "Poème Héroïque," Op. 33…Marcel Dupré, "Quatre Motets," Op. 9…Marcel Dupré, and "Requiem," Op. 9…Maurice Duruflé.

Maurice Duruflé’s 1947 musical composition of the ancient texts of the Requiem Mass is unique because it is derived from the very first musical setting of these venerable prayers – the Gregorian Chant. The simplicity of the chant is underscored by Duruflé’s lush and opulent harmonic setting for choir, organ, and orchestra. An older French colleague of Duruflé, Marcel Dupré composed his "Quatre Motets" for Choir and Organs in 1916, and his "Poeme Heroique" for the unusual grouping of organ, brass, and field drum in 1936.

The "Poéme Héroïque" was commissioned for the rededication ceremony of the restored Cathedral of Verdun on the 20th Anniversary of the World War I horrific battle that ruined the church in 1916.

The performance is free of admission and open to the public, but all donations are gratefully accepted. Free seating passes can be obtained by calling 801-994-4663.
