WEST HAVEN - The Knights of Columbus traveled to West Haven for one purpose, to put a big smile to the face of a very special young girl.

In January, Marcelina Kubica, a 7th grade honor student at Ogden Preparatory Academy in Ogden and the CRE Program at Holy Family Parish, submitted a poster in the Knights of Columbus Council #14399's Substance Abuse Poster Contest. Kubica won first place in her age group for the Alcohol Abuse Division. Her poster was submitted to the Utah State Substance Abuse Poster Contest and, she again, won first place.

Kubica's poster is now in New Haven, Conn., where it will be judged at the international level. Winners will be announced in May and posted on www.KofC.org.

In addition to her ability to create effective poster art, Kubica is an accomplished musician in piano and violin. She loves to learn languages, is a Girl Scout, an alter server, a liturgical reader and was recently elected to the office of secretary for the Holy Family youth group. Marcelina is the daughter of Kris and Anna Kubica of south Ogden.

Ed Burns, district deputy of District No. 1, thanked Father Patrick Elliott, pastor of Holy Family Parish, for the opportunity to honor Kubic, and then introduced the visiting Utah State Knight of Columbus officers.

Charles Dover, Utah State Deputy, thanked the brothers of Council #14399 for supporting the youth of Holy Family Parish. He said, "Helping them grow and develop their Christian faith and core values is the most important work we do."
