During the month of October Saint Andrew third-graders participated in UNICEF’s Trick-or-Treat fundraiser. On Oct. 1, the third-grade class set a goal of raising $100 for the entire month to purchase a medicine delivery bicycle. The next day, they brought in a total of $88. As a result, the students changed their goal to $240 to donate a "School-in-a-Box" kit that lets kids learn from anywhere. During the subsequent weeks, the third-graders brainstormed ideas for fundraising, including partnering with their 6th-grade buddy class. The students also integrated UNICEF’s work and the seven themes of Catholic social teaching into their learning. Furthermore, students incorporated these lessons with language arts, math, science, social studies and art. The third-graders were able to track their fundraising as well as resource progress throughout the month using a UNICEF map. On Nov. 1, the third-grade class cheered ecstatically as they counted $270 raised. Throughout this experience the third-graders discovered their own potential to make the world a better place.
