For the past three years, a Kearns-St. Ann student has won the South Salt Lake Public Works contest to name a new piece of equipment. Each year, officials from the Department of Public Works visit five local schools in South Salt Lake to show them their newest piece of equipment. The students then are invited to submit a name for the vehicle. This year, a name was needed for a front-end loader; Kearns-St. Ann first-grader Jayden Eldredge submitted the winning name for the truck: “Grave Digger.” He came up with the name when he went to a motor truck show and “my favorite truck was called Grave Digger, but it had a broken engine so I never saw it run,” Eldredge said. “When I saw [the front-end loader] it reminded me of the broken truck, so I called it Grave Digger. I’m really happy I won.” The name will be painted on the front-end loader’s side. Eldredge is invited to ride on the South Salt Lake Public Works 4th of July float; he also received a gift certificate from Toys-R-Us. The class is shown with teacher Carrie Justesen and members of the South Salt Lake Public Works Department.
