Lawyer speaks of encountering Jesus in lives of poor

DRAPER — Lawyer Barbara Szweda has done her share of corporate law work. She’s argued on the side of the wealthy and the prosperous. But her need for that vague, "something more" led her away from corporate law and into teaching and immigration law. It was among her idealistic students and the neediest of immigrants from Rwanda, Honduras, El Salvador, and other developing countries that she met Jesus, she said.

SALT LAKE CITY — The bells of the Cathedral of the Madeleine, those four deep tones that toll out in joy and in sorrow, were the focus of the fourth annual Bishop’s Dinner at the Grand America Hotel Sept. 25. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Bells on Temple Square, under the direction of Thomas M. Waldron, rang in the dinner with 350 hand bells ranging from those weighing a few ounces to those weighing 13 lbs.

FORT DUCHESNE — The 50th anniversary of the Kateri Tekakwitha Center in Fort Duchesne was not only a time for celebration, it was a time for old friends to visit – Father David Schorr, who served the Uintah Basin area for four years, and Franciscan Sister Margaret Liam Glennane, who served with him; Sister of St. Ann Kateri Mitchell of Great Falls Mont., executive director of the National Kateri Tekakwitha Conference and all Kateri Circles. They and Bishop John C. Wester were welcomed happily by Tekakwitha Center members and parishioners of St. Helen Parish, Roosevelt and St. James Parish, Vernal.
