SALT LAKE CITY — St Gregory of Tours, the sixth-century bishop who served in what is today France, records in his "Vitae Patrum" an interesting event in the life of his uncle, who also served as a bishop. Gregory’s uncle, Gallus of Clermont had traveled to celebrate Mass with a brother bishop in another diocese accompanied by a deacon named Valentius. Bishop Gallus had ordered his deacon to maintain silence throughout the Mass, but apparently moved by the occasion, Deacon Valentius suddenly burst into song in front of the gathered assembly. >>>

Bishop Niederauer remembered for 'human touch'

SALT LAKE CITY — Shortly after coming to the Diocese of Salt Lake City in 1998, I attended a meeting where Bishop Niederauer was present. After I was introduced to him, he inquired about Sr. Celine Dounies since he didn’t see her at the gathering that day. Friday, Feb. 03, 2006
SALT LAKE CITY — "Just like old times in the Holy Land, Max," the bishop greeted me as we vested for the noon-day Mass at the Cathedral of the Madeleine on Christmas Day. His exhausting schedule was not evident in his cheerful greeting. He was his usual warm and witty self. His remark, "Just like old times," was in reference to our pilgrimage in November to the Holy Land where I had the privilege of serving the bishop as deacon of the Mass at eight of the holy sites we visited in Israel and Palestine. >>>

With strong support of bishop, prison chaplain perseveres

Friday, Feb. 03, 2006
AMERICAN FORK — When Bishop Niederauer asked me to become prison chaplain at the Utah State Prison in 1996, I have to admit, at first I was apprehensive. Although I had been offering Mass at the facility in Cedar City, this assignment would be very different, especially since I would be assuming a position that was newly created – that of supervising chaplain. I thought if I lasted more than one year it would be a miracle. >>>
