Cello is magic in the hands of Kearns-St. Ann's Katie McMahon

SALT LAKE CITY — Katie McMahon’s father, Dr. William McMahon told his youngest child to "dream big." At just 13, Katie is reaping the benefits of taking his advice. Katie has been playing the cello since she was in kindergarten, and a quarter-sized cello was just right. As she enters the eighth grade at Kearns-St. Ann School, her three-quarter sized cello goes with her.

SALT LAKE CITY – Luke Mirabelli is as at home at the piano as he is writing a piece of short fiction or poetry. Both activities are just scratching the surface of this 15-year-old Highland High School sophomore-to-be. He has traveled to Italy twice and is fluent in Italian and Spanish. He was the only freshman in his Advanced Placement (AP) English class. He plays clarinet and alto sax in the school band.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Knights of Columbus are inviting motorcyclists to roll with them on Saturday, June 16 to raise money for the University Health Care Burn Trauma Center Youth Camp. It’s the second annual Knights of Columbus "Wild Ride" poker run with dinner, door prizes, and games – all to send young burn survivors to a place where they can enjoy outdoor activities and make friends this summer.

BOUNTIFUL — "Freedom is not free," said Geri Stephenson at a Memorial Dedication Service in honor of her son, Dion Stephenson, a U.S. Marine who was killed in the first ground battle of Khafji in Desert Storm Jan. 29, 1991. The service was held May 24, at the newly constructed Bountiful Recreation Center to unveil a memorial plaque over the swimming pool in honor of Dion.

Knights hold centennial convention in St. George

SALT LAKE CITY — The number 14239 is the latest addition to the litany of councils of the Knights of Columbus in the Diocese of Salt Lake City beginning with Salt Lake Council 602 more than a century ago. Announced at the knights’ 100th annual convention May 5-6 in St. George, the St. Andrew council has already surpassed the 30 required to form a council with 44 knights ready to serve their community.
