SALT LAKE CITY — Dr. Juliana Boerio-Goates was tidying up after the Jan. 21 Diocesan Pastoral Council (DPC) meeting at St. Ann Catholic Church. As president of the council, she presided over the last meeting and, with Bishop-designate George Niederauer, for whom the council served as an advisory body, Boerio-Goates officially disbanded the council. With grace befitting a woman who always seems to know the right thing to say, she presented Bishop Niederauer with a gift and bid council members farewell.

SANDY — "What We’ve Accomplished Together" is the name of a DVD making appearances at a Catholic parish near you. The celebratory production for the 40th anniversary of the Diocesan Development Drive (DDD) was produced by Diocesan Vicar General Msgr. J. Terrence Fitzgerald, written by DDD Director Shannon Lee, and filmed and edited by Cris Paulsen. With an archival interview with the late Bishop Joseph Lennox Federal, founder of the DDD in 1966, and interviews with Bishop William K. Weigand of Sacramento, Calif., the Diocese of Salt Lake City’s seventh bishop, and Archbishop-designate George Niederauer of San Francisco, Calif., our eighth bishop, "What We’ve Accomplished Together" is a valuable historical tool tracing not only the history of the annual fund drive that supports the bishop’s ministries, but a dramatic look at the last 60 years of diocesan history.

SALT LAKE CITY — How many people think "Thank God it’s Friday"? At Cosgriff School in January the letters TGIF means more than just thanking God for Friday. When I first began working at Cosgriff school 10 years ago, I noticed on the school calendar that every Friday in January had the letters TGIF written on it. Puzzled, I began to ask if the staff had meetings at the restaurant TGI Friday’s. After a laugh, I was told this is a fun program the school instituted years before to give the students a time to learn a new craft, participate in an activity they otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate in; simply have a little fun on a Friday afternoon in January.

OGDEN — "What can you say about Archbishop-designate George Niederauer, who has been everything for us?" said Benedictine Sister Danile Knight, director of Our Lady of the Mountains Retreat House. "He is personable, a very deeply spiritual man, and an intellectual person. He can associate with anyone he meets and feel comfortable with them. Yet, you do not feel small. He always makes you feel welcome.

SALT LAKE CITY — Flannery O’Connor, one of Bishop George Niederauer’s favorite authors and the focus of his graduate degrees in American Literature, once said, "All my stories are about the action of grace on a character." When these words were first spoken, O’Connor had no idea she was describing the last 11 years in the Catholic Diocese of Utah under the pastoral leadership of Bishop Niederauer.
