On New Year’s Day, we will celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. Because Mary is also the Mother of the Prince of Peace, we can certainly honor her with the title “Mother of Peace.” For this reason, the beginning of the new calendar year is an excellent opportunity to beseech our Mother of Peace to intercede for us and for our world as we experience an ever- spiraling growth of violence. >>>

Year in Review

The Diocese of Salt Lake City saw many highlights in 2014. Most significant among these was the priestly ordination of Father Jorge Roldán Sánchez, now parochial vicar at Saint Mary of the Assumption Parish in Park City, and the ordination to the transitional diaconate of Joseph Delka and David Trujillo, who returned to their seminarian studies and are scheduled to be ordained to the priesthood next spring. >>>

One of the most ancient Church documents – the Didache [di-dah-kay] - states that on the Lord’s Day, people are to come together to give thanks “after first confessing their sins.” We continue this ancient practice at the start of Mass by what is called the “Act of Penitence.” This act takes place at the beginning of Mass for good reason: Matthew records Christ’s command that we be reconciled with God and one another before offering our sacrifice at the altar. Monsignor Matthew O. Wixted died at Saint Joseph Villa Dec. 26, 2014 of age-related causes.  He was 78.   >>>
