Born April 7, 1968, to Jack and Ruby Davis, Jill was the youngest of nine children and enjoyed being the “baby” and all the spoiling that came with it

When writing Catholic history, it is all too easy to fall into the trap of thinking the Church and the hierarchy are one and the same, and that Catholic history is mostly about popes and bishops and Church councils and the like. As a matter of fact, we lay Catholics comprise all but a tiny minority of the Church, and I am always looking for ways to tell our stories. So it is with great pleasure that this month and next I am able to write about not only lay Catholics but lay Catholic women, whose stories are the most neglected of all.

One school, 234 seniors each offering 40 hours of volunteer work: If each hour were paid at minimum wage, that would translate to more than $67,000 donated in one week to 30 different agencies throughout Utah by Juan Diego Catholic High School seniors as part of a metamorphosis of the service program of the school.

Unfortunately, when most of us hear or read the word “stewardship,” we instinctively think of it spelled as “$tewardship,” a code word for giving money to the Church. The request for money may be politely phrased, clothed in pious language and linked to giving of time and talents. But, in the end, stewardship still means, for most of us: “I must give some of my money so that we can operate the Church.”
