Pilgrimage and Retreat to El Salvador: Jan. 14-25, 2008

Like Guatemala, El Salvador is also a land soaked with the blood of so many martyrs. One, Archbishop, Oscar Romero, was martyred by the Salvadoran military as he was celebrating Mass on March 24, 1980. We "pilgrims" had the privilege of visiting the chapel where Romero was killed and celebrating Mass. We saw the vestments Romero was wearing at the Mass, stained with his blood.

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — Como Guatemala, El Salvador es también una tierra bañada con la sangre de muchísimos mártires. Un Arzobispo, Oscar Romero, fue martirizado por la milicia Salvadoreña mientras celebraba la Misa el 24 de marzo de 1980. Nosotros "peregrinos" tuvimos el privilegio de visitar la capilla donde Romero fue asesinado durante la celebración de la Misa. Vimos las vestiduras que Romero llevaba puestas cuando celebraba la Misa, éstas están manchadas con su sangre.

KEARNS — The celebration of the Vietnamese New Year – the Year of the Rat – was an occasion of great joy for the people of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Vietnamese Parish Feb. 3. Making his first visit to the parish since his arrival in the diocese, Bishop Wester opened the Mass with the Sign of the Cross in the language of the people – Vietnamese.

SANTIAGO ATITLAN, Guatemala — On Jan. 20, 2008, my 20 companion priests and deacons were concelebrating Mass in the 16th Century church of Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. It’s a beautiful but very poor town situated on a gorgeous lake (Atitlan) and tucked between three shapely and active volcanoes.

El Domingo 20 de enero de 2008, mis 20 compañeros sacerdotes y diáconos se encontraban cocelebrando una Misa en una iglesia del siglo 16 en Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala. Esta es una población muy bonita pero también muy pobre situada en un espléndido lago (Atitlan) y enclavada entre tres volcanes torneados y activos.
