SALT LAKE CITY —Ash Wednesday begins the 40 days of Lent. Although Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, many Catholics attend Mass on this day to have their foreheads marked with the ashes as a reminder that their earthly life will pass away; the ashes are made from the palms from the previous year’s Palm Sunday, which are burned for this purpose.

The Diocese of Salt Lake City Lenten Retreat will be Saturday, March 7, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1375 E. Spring Lane, Salt Lake City. The retreat leader in English will be Sister Linda Marie Bolinski, Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius of Danville, Penn., who will offer preaching and time for quiet reflection. The retreat leader in Spanish will be Cecilia von Bertrab, a professor of the Oblate School of Theology. Cost: $10 per person, includes catered lunch.
