SALT LAKE CITY — How many people think "Thank God it’s Friday"? At Cosgriff School in January the letters TGIF means more than just thanking God for Friday. When I first began working at Cosgriff school 10 years ago, I noticed on the school calendar that every Friday in January had the letters TGIF written on it. Puzzled, I began to ask if the staff had meetings at the restaurant TGI Friday’s. After a laugh, I was told this is a fun program the school instituted years before to give the students a time to learn a new craft, participate in an activity they otherwise wouldn’t be able to participate in; simply have a little fun on a Friday afternoon in January.

OGDEN — "What can you say about Archbishop-designate George Niederauer, who has been everything for us?" said Benedictine Sister Danile Knight, director of Our Lady of the Mountains Retreat House. "He is personable, a very deeply spiritual man, and an intellectual person. He can associate with anyone he meets and feel comfortable with them. Yet, you do not feel small. SALT LAKE CITY — Flannery O’Connor, one of Bishop George Niederauer’s favorite authors and the focus of his graduate degrees in American Literature, once said, "All my stories are about the action of grace on a character." "Dear Bishop Niederauer,
"Congratulations on your recent appointment to the Archdiocese of San Francisco. It has been a pleasure to work with you to secure the future of the Catholic Church in Utah. The endowments have more than tripled during your 11 years as chairman of the Catholic Foundation of Utah. We are going to miss your wit and wisdom at our Catholic Foundation of Utah (CFU) meetings and we wish you success in San Francisco."

Vicar General
When a prominent leader moves on, the question often asked is what will be their legacy. For anyone who has read the newspaper editorials, listened to radio and television commentaries, or ever made the acquaintance of Bishop George Niederauer, the legacy is clear: He invested in individuals and in the community. In the past 11 years, he shook more hands and addressed more congregations than most Utahns of recent memory.

SALT LAKE CITY — Time flies when you’re having fun! It has been 10 years since Msgr. George Davich organized "Bishop’s Bridge." We were truly honored to be included, but at the same time a little nervous. However, after the first meeting the nervousness retreated.

During the more than ten years he served as Bishop of the Salt Lake City Diocese, the Most Reverend George Niederauer has won the respect and admiration of Utahns from every walk of life, Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Now, as he moves on to assume even more challenging responsibilities as Archbishop of the San Francisco Archdiocese, it is appropriate that we pause for a moment to chronicle, albeit incompletely, some of the characteristics of an unusually talented, able, and genuinely good man.
