George Niederauer from Los Angeles would be our new bishop. At the time I was a student in the graduate school of religion at Fordham University. Jesuit Father Vincent Novak, the dean of the school, spent his summers celebrating Mass for vacationing priests in Los Angeles, and I hoped he would know our new bishop. While Fr. Novak didn’t know him personally, he offered to make some calls to his friends in Los Angeles. A few hours later I was summoned to Fr. Novak’s office for the report, "He’s the best." Bishop Niederauer: Never Afraid to Tackle the Sensitive Issues

PARK CITY — When I was a youngster, many years ago, I was terrified of our parish priest. I remember how absolutely amazed I was that Fr. Stedman of Our Lady of the Cenacle in New York City could hear a whisper emanating from fifteen pews back when he was on the altar. He’d whirl around, point at me, and I’d spend the rest of the Mass on my knees in the center aisle. I still think that was the start of my knee problems. If anyone had told me I was to meet the Bishop, I’d have had apoplexy.

'The jilted-priest blues'

People have asked me how I feel about the announcement of our bishop moving to San Francisco and I have pondered how it makes me feel. I imagine I could say that it makes me feel naked and vulnerable as if I was stranded on the salt flats on a cold winter day with the wind howling and the low sun dropping over the horizon. I admit this is a bit dramatic, yet he was our bishop, when I started to discern whether I was should enter the seminary. He was our bishop when I was in seminary. He ordained me and was our bishop for the first two or so years of my priestly ministry. He has walked with me on my journey of discernment as a seminarian and a priest. >>>
