WEST VALLEY CITY – In 2004, Society of the Divine Word Father Reynato T. Rodillas came to the United States from the northern part of the Philippines planning only to visit his aunt in San Francisco. The visit lengthened to three years after the pastor of Fr. Rodillas’ aunt’s parish invited him to stay and help. Fr. Rodillas stayed, even applying to the Archdiocese of San Francisco for a position, but was turned down.

Capital campaign launched for new homeless shelter in Ogden

OGDEN — With more families than ever before facing homelessness, St. Anne’s Center in Ogden is hoping to move to a new, expanded facility that they plan to build on land donated by the city at Pacific and 33rd streets. The capital campaign, with a goal of $7 million, kicked off on June 29. The new shelter will be known as the Lantern House to reflect the community involvement.

Peers elect Ed Scott as Assistant Coach of the Year

SALT LAKE CITY — Ed Scott was honored as Assistant Coach of the Year by the Utah Lacrosse Association in the Spring Division I Post Season awards. Scott has been the assistant lacrosse coach at Judge Memorial Catholic High School for six years.

OGDEN — Members of the League of Promoters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, family and friends gathered to celebrate 100 years of service at a centennial Mass at Saint Joseph Parish, followed by a luncheon at the Marriott Hotel in Ogden July 1. The Mass was in memory of the 185 deceased members of the league. The most recently deceased league member was Kathryn Loffredo, who died June 1.

Interfaith effort aims to prevent abortion in Iron County

CEDAR CITY — More than 1 million women have abortions each year in the United States; about 4,000 of those are in Utah. While women have the legal right to terminate unwanted pregnancies, the Knights of Columbus Council 11246 at Christ the King Parish in Cedar City has organized a new multi-denominational effort to help women in Iron County reconsider their decision to abort their babies.

Private Showing for Harry Potter — Saturday, July 16 at 9 a.m., St. Mary Teen Ministry’s will have a private showing of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2" at Syracuse 6 Movie Theater, 2428 W 1700 S, Syracuse. Proceeds will go towards the effort to pay for the Catholic Youth Conference in San Diego on July 29-30. Cost is $12 which will include one movie showing, one medium popcorn, one medium soda and one entry for a $50 drawing. Tickets can be purchased after Mass, on Monday night at the teen ministry meetings or call Lisa Mendez 801-928-4691.
