Catholic Community Services recognizes humanitarians

SALT LAKE CITY – Catholic Community Services celebrated its 65th birthday in style Nov. 10, with a star-studded event that included the Most Rev. John C. Wester, bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City; Gary and Jeanette Herbert, the Utah governor and first lady; Elder M. Russell Ballard, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Quorum of Twelve; and the Right Rev. Scott B. Hayashi, the newly ordained bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Utah, Phil and Sandy McCarthey and Tom and Mary McCarthey, among others.

SALT LAKE CITY — For the Most Rev. John C. Wester, bishop of Salt Lake City, Nov. 11 was less about celebrating veterans and more about honoring their legacy of guaranteeing fundamental American rights such as the pursuit of happiness and the right to speak openly in the public square. Bishop Wester spoke twice that day on the topic of immigration. Though his subject matter was the same, his audiences couldn’t have been more different. In the morning he joined a number of civic, religious, business and political leaders at the Capitol in signing the Utah Compact, a set of five principles meant to guide the immigration reform debate in the Beehive State (see sidebar.) In the evening, Bishop Wester spoke to college students at the Saint Catherine of Siena Newman Center (see related story.)

TOOELE – Saint Marguerite Parish will celebrate its centennial Nov. 20, with a Mass and the dedication of the cove in which a statue of Saint Marguerite will be placed. The Most Rev. John C. Wester, bishop of Salt Lake City, and Father Ken Vialpando, a former Tooele resident and now pastor of Saint Joseph Parish, Ogden, will speak following a dinner.

An overtime victory for Juan Diego in semi-final

Juan Diego tight end Eric Heinz raised his hands in triumph after catching the game-winning pass against rival Judge Memorial in overtime on Nov. 12. He knew what catching that football meant: a trip to the state championship game. With an 11-1 record for the season, Juan Diego has paved its way to a third consecutive state title game. Not only will Juan Diego be competing for the state crown, but the team will be up against rival Hurricane, who has met Juan Diego in the state game for the previous two years.
